Social Trends Essay This great movement was great in the way it was perceived to prepare people for death through making strong their faith. This was indeed a great deal in America during the colonial period. The likelihood of death was very prevalent all over in the colonial era (Butler, pp. 305-25). Deaths from floods, malnutrition, disease and other complications coming from childbirth were a common occurrence. Death was in the minds of all while making an effort to remain alive. The message from the church was that people would be part of devil’s accomplice because of their sins if they did not receive forgiveness from God. As a result of faith, quite a number of colonialists were of the opinion that they required their church on matters of clothing, food as well as shelter. Through strengthening the citizen’s faith, the church got hold of a very imperative role in the British Colony in the Northern part of America. Among these most famous men of this time were people like George Whitefield who was quite outspoken as well as adored and at the same time feared owing to his messages. It is said that George preached to 19,000 people in Boston in a period of three days. As though that was not enough, he left a group of 25,000 individuals being disturbed by the fear of everlasting damnation. The inspiration that came to people was to move out and establish churches in their own cities; construct houses for the disadvantaged and also employ ministers to assist them in sustaining their new and wholesome life of Christianity (Butler, pp. 305-25). Economic Trends As a result of the great awakening, many individuals resigned in their jobs and embarked on a journey of a travelling minister. There was now a great and spontaneous entry of ministers to the colonial America. These preachers were not ordained. They included uneducated farmers who regarded themselves as the poor of Christ. The core mission was to stress equality in humanity as well as emphasising that heaven was a home for the poor and not the rich. They emerged as wandering preachers who extended the Great Awakening amidst the poor and the rich, the illiterate and the educated, and also in the black-nation together with seaboard cities and towns. Conclusion Even though the Great Awakening based on religious foundations came to a brick wall by years after 1740, the effects therein were far reaching. In New England together with the South, changes started to weaken the authority of the culture of the upper class. This was a change that was anticipated for in the colonial America. Condemnation to the poor was evident because of their dirty lifestyle which differed with the very articulate lifestyle of the upper class. The Great Awakening in the end led to change of opinions and values that influenced politics together with daily life. There was a self-worth in the common man. Individuals assumed other responsibilities in dealings of religion. They on the other hand became sceptical of the already existing authority and belief systems. These particular values have been the core values of the society of America from the time of the Great Awakening and are perceived to last for years in the future (Butler, pp. 305-25). Different Deaths in Death Be Not Proud and Do Not Go Gentle Essay

I feel uncomfortable making comparisons because a successful work of art, whether it is a poem or a painting, has to be judged on its own merits. â€Å"Death Be Not Proud† and â€Å"Do not go gentle† are both great poems, by two poets with different philosophic outlooks and different ways of looking at the world, written at different times, and in different styles. On the surface both these poets seem to be talking about the same things but a careful reading of the poems show that their views differ in both substance and in style. John Donne was a metaphysical poet of the early 17th Century, a clergyman, the Dean of St Paul’s in London (WikiSource). The label â€Å"metaphysical† was attached by the critic Dr. Samuel Johnson to a group of 17th century poets who shared a common style: they employed wit, subtle argument and linked our ordinary life to the eternal, â€Å"looking beyond the palpable† (Lukà ¡cs). Dylan Thomas was a mid-20th century Welshman, who worked for the BBC and drank himself to death before he turned forty. Apart from great poetic talent, there is little in common in their poems. John Donne writes about death. In fact he addresses death directly: Death be not proud, you are neither mighty nor dreadful, you do not really kill: â€Å"One short sleep past, we wake eternally/ And death shall be no more; death thou shalt die.† (Donne) The poem expresses a defiant faith in the hereafter and in resurrection. Death is cut down to size with simple but powerful arguments. Dylan Thomas’s poem is not about death but about dying; it is not an argument-based poem but an emotionally-charged poem, wordy and repetitive. The repeated phrases increase the impact of the emotion on us: â€Å"Do not go gentle into that good night† an... ...h but about loss. So perhaps modern poets tackle death indirectly. The modern sentiment that is acceptable is friendship and love; to mourn a friend (or a father) is therefore acceptable. This way, modern poets slide past the death problem. My place: My space

This world is definitely made up of mild illusions that we are still living harmoniously with each other and with our environment. We have come to this age where society is not reaching to people in human forms anymore. Human interaction emerges over the net’s immense capacity. We are in dire need of a fulfilling social interaction. What we have are lots of electronic chat and message board’s trash with no honest emotional interconnections to serve feelings and sharing real experiences itself be it pain or joy. We all have the compassion to share what we feel and radiate inner happiness to other people who are in search for even one friend to understand their world, this world and them. Living in a fast paced society, in a fast paced world, makes adults and youth evolve to unlimitedly cope up the pressures of work, environment, social interaction stratification, family, and technology. Sadly, adult’s priority listing serves to cope up on everything where they can gain advantage especially monetary ones living family relationships concept behind. The idea might be challenging but simply exhilarating! I feel the need to do my thing amidst the complexities of my environment and human nature. There is something I have to catch on in this world – a need to catch me. Dare ask the question of meaning: Are people losing themselves to the black hole of their own creativity? We perform what we seek and in the process of achieving lose a part of ourselves and buried a lot of relationships therein, but to whose gain? My bedroom is the only place in this world where I can express myself be it art, poetry, speech writing, and reading. My computer is in my bedroom and it does a lot of things for me to serve my personal interest of relaxation, my music, my DVD’s, and my passion work at home academic writing and research. My bedroom is my place giving me my space from an infinite battle of articulating progress and pace. The place to spend one’s time to regenerate youth and vigor does not only mean costly trips to beauty spas and saloons. It also mandates comfort and convenience in experiencing freedom of doing the things you love thus making it your very own passion and inspiration to be the person you really wanted to be without catering illusions. Just plain me and my unique characteristic of enjoying the art of being alone without the presence of friends and other people engaging me into general discussions and afterwards ends up telling me what to do. This is rather a contrary to the kind of empathy and intellectual responses I expect out of human interactions. Replenishing my energy and recovering my perspective in life through music and meditations makes me feel whole and refresh upon completion of the task. My bedroom is the only place in the world that respects my privacy and guess I can say I am in-charge here without unwanted interference. Reflections of the day’s events will start to show dramatically in a series of replays in my mind. This is a kind of a rain check that serves to gauge how well we perform as a person. We do not need to check work performance in our quiet moments, we have our company’s performance appraisal forms for that. We practically needed moral updates to determine if the world has not influence us as it pushes to affect our views and inner perspectives. Sometimes when we need to cry and reach out to our inner self out of sorrow and deep frustrations, we can easily bump our head on our soft pillows without letting others see off poised drama performance. People could be so disappointing when no matter how hard you try to explain things and discuss the subject eye-to-eye still their heads are in parallel run on to something that is clamoring to their own thoughts and conclusion. It is an amazing art of listening that’s not really hearing what they listened since they weren’t able to get the meaning of what you have been telling them. It is a kind of a frustratingly off course discussion. They convincingly believed themselves to be authorities on any topic which make them tend to talk more and give advices that form as a pressing order rather than consoling. My frustrations would make me want to let that voice in me get out and be heard, but on what form? I write and reach out to myself in my bedroom. When everything else is still and quiet, it is easier to reach to the supernatural in us and feel the beating of our hearts while meditating. I seek my strength in my inner world because if I seek my strength from the support of other people then I will have no strength at all. Only faith can continuously support to carry us with our burden. Our constant fellowship with God must never be taken for granted in the entirety of human evolution. It seems that the world has been so busy and so filled with science that they forget the genesis of life. Witnessing further how science, social stratification, position and wealth accumulation has lead man far from the candor of God. It seems to deliberately change a person to another form of being yet filled with emptiness in his entirety. We forget the meaning and we find ourselves empty and continuously making a detour with our concept on life ideologies. People could frantically worry about on a lot of things and work. They can be a member of any group or belong to any aspired circle of friends. One could be so successful but still lonely and devoid of happiness like our super action heroes and blatantly blonde actresses. It is because each of us needed to find time for ourselves, to find ourselves, to find God, and regain a better perspective in life. My bedroom gives it all, creativeness, wholeness, authority, comfort, and satisfaction to my passion in writing. Â   Â

Class Readings And Homosexuality Through The Perspective...

A privilege is any unearned advantage available to a particular person or group of people. As McIntosh had described, privileges are invisible, weightless knapsacks containing special provisions, maps and passports (White Privilege). The privileged rarely see themselves as the oppressor, but instead take the majority of their rights for granted, which protects them from many kinds of hostility, distress, and violence. In the following paper, I describe the hardships associated with disability and homosexuality through the perspective of Connie Panzarino, as portrayed in her memoir The Me In The Mirror. I will then relate her experiences to class readings and describe how able-bodied and heterosexual privileges are threats to those who do not fit into either category. The inequalities posed by able-bodied privileges are illustrated throughout the memoir, which will be compared to examples from The Invisible Backpack of Ablebodied Privilege Checklist. To begin with, Connie has limited mobility due to her disability. As a result, her condition requires her to have constant attendant care because she is unable to tend to her own needs. For example, Connie s disability prevents her from using the restroom, and she is unable to turn in bed.
